Read the word list

The hundredth day of school usually lands in late January or February, and teachers fill it with counting, collections and a little dress-up. This list follows that day: the number words from twenty to ninety, the math vocabulary behind place value and skip counting, and the party words such as crown, cheer and hooray. Most of the audience is kindergarten through second grade, so a large share of the words are short and phonetic.

Harder entries keep older students and parents working. Hundredth, achievement, estimation and subtraction are long and rely on letters that rarely turn up in the first few guesses, while short words like zero and tally can still trip a player who opens with the wrong vowel. Phrases such as ten frame and skip counting give a whole-class round a clear shape on the board.

76 entries. Our solver needed 2.7 wrong guesses on average: 28 easy, 29 medium and 19 hard. The toughest is zero (9 misses), the quickest eighty (0).

Using this list in class

Use a few words as a morning-meeting warm-up on the day itself: put up one blank phrase such as hundred chart and let the class guess letters while you count the wrong guesses together. Kindergarten and first grade do well with the short number words, since each one can be matched against a printed number line.

Second grade can take the longer math words. For a station, print the sheet and have pairs play with the answer key, then record the words they solved with tally marks. The number words also set up a spelling lesson: forty drops the u from four, and ninety keeps the e from nine.
