Hangman Maker

Type your own words, one per line, and get a link that plays them in order. Use it for this week's spelling words, a vocabulary review or a party game.

What the maker does

Each word or phrase becomes one round. The game plays them in the order you typed, shows your clue above the board, and gives the players the number of wrong guesses you picked. Letters, spaces, apostrophes and hyphens are allowed; anything else is removed, and each entry can be up to 40 characters.

The words are scrambled into the part of the link after the # sign. That part isn't sent to our server and isn't recorded in analytics, so we never see your list, and a student glancing at the link can't read the answers.

Ideas

  • Spelling test practice: paste this week's list and send the link home. Students play it the night before the test.
  • Vocabulary review: key terms from a science or history unit, with the unit as the clue.
  • Party game: family names, inside jokes, places you've been together.
  • Paper copy: "Print as a worksheet" sends your words to the printable maker, which makes a sheet and an answer key.

For a single word for one friend, the two-player page is quicker. Need words? Try the word generator or any of the hangman word lists.

Making a game for a whole class

Send one link to everyone. Each student plays the same words in the same order, on their own device, and their results stay on that device. If you want a common clue, type it once and it shows with every word; if each word needs its own clue, make a link per word on the two-player page instead. A list of ten words takes most students between five and ten minutes on Medium.
