Hangman Words

Choosing the word is half of hangman. A word that is too easy ends in four guesses and nobody remembers it, while a word that is too hard ends the game before the second round. This page is the starting point for choosing well. Every list on the site has been sorted by the same measure, so you can pick by how hard you want the round to be instead of guessing.

The measure is a solver. It plays each word the way a sensible player would: it looks at the pattern so far, finds every dictionary word that still fits, and guesses the letter found in the most of them. A word's score is the number of wrong guesses the solver makes before it finishes. A score of 0 or 1 is Easy, 2 to 4 is Medium and 5 or more is Hard. Because the solver plays the same way every time, scores are comparable across the whole site.

The scores contradict a common assumption. Short words are the hard ones. Among the 15,000 most common words, three-letter words average 7.5 wrong guesses, five-letter words 3.7 and ten-letter words 0.6. A short pattern fits hundreds of words and has few letters to hit, while a long word reveals its vowels and common consonants almost at once. That single fact explains most of the lists here.

Choosing a list

Pick by who is playing. For young children, start with hangman words for kids, then move up. For a mixed family game, the good hangman words list sits in the middle: common words that take a few wrong guesses. For confident readers and adults, the hardest list and the rare-letter list do the damage.

Pick by how long you want a round to last. Long words and the easy list give quick rounds that suit a class of thirty. Three- and four-letter words make slow, tense rounds for two players with time. The families below cover difficulty (hardest, hard, good, easy), length (short, long, and 3 to 7 letters), letter tricks (no vowels, J Q X Z), phrases and idioms, movie and song titles, themed lists such as animals and holidays, and spelling lists by grade. Each one can be played here or printed with an answer key.
