Privacy Policy

Hangman Lab ("we", "us") publishes a free hangman game, word lists and printable worksheets at hangmanlab.com. This policy explains what information is collected when you visit, why, and what you can do about it.

The short version

• There are no accounts. We never ask you to sign up.
• Your game progress (streaks, best times, difficulty setting) is saved in your own browser, not on our servers.
• Words you type into the two-player game or the hangman maker travel inside the share link itself. They are not sent to us.
• We use analytics to see which games and lists people use, and we may show advertising, which uses third-party cookies.
• We don't sell your personal information.

Information you give us

Only what you choose to send. If you email us, we receive your address and your message and keep them as long as we need to reply. We don't add anyone to a mailing list.

Game progress stays on your device

Daily puzzle results, streaks, best times, win counts and your difficulty choice are stored in your browser's local storage so they are there next time. They never leave your device. Clearing your browser data deletes them, and we can't restore them because we never had them.

Share links

When you set a word for a friend or build a game with the hangman maker, the words are scrambled into the part of the link after the # sign. Browsers do not send that part of a link to a web server, so we don't receive or store your words. Anyone you give the link to can, of course, play it.

Information collected automatically

Like nearly every website, our hosting and analytics record technical details of each visit: the pages viewed, the page or search that sent you, approximate location from your IP address (city or region, not street level), browser and device type, screen size, language and time. We use this in aggregate to see which lists are useful, which pages are broken and where the site is slow. The game also reports when a puzzle is started and finished, how long it took and whether it was solved, with no words you typed and nothing that identifies you.

Analytics

• Google Analytics 4 (Google LLC): aggregate traffic measurement, processed as described in Google's privacy policy. You can opt out with Google's browser add-on.
• Microsoft Clarity (Microsoft Corporation): heatmaps and anonymised session replay used to find usability problems. Clarity masks typed text by default. See Microsoft's privacy statement.

Advertising

Hangman Lab is free and is supported by advertising. Our advertising partners and their vendors may set cookies or similar identifiers to measure ad performance and, where permitted, to show ads relevant to your interests. They may receive your IP address, browser details and the pages you view here. We don't receive or store the personal information they collect, and we don't sell personal information. Where the law requires consent for personalised advertising, including in the EU and UK, you'll see a consent notice and can change your choice at any time. Residents of California and other US states with similar laws can opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information for targeted advertising through the same notice or by emailing us. You can also opt out of interest-based ads at optout.aboutads.info and youronlinechoices.eu.

Cookies

We use cookies and local storage for analytics, for advertising as described above, and to remember your choices. Every browser lets you block or delete cookies. The game and the printables work without them; you'll just lose saved streaks.

Children's privacy

Hangman Lab is written for the adults who choose and run the games: teachers, parents, homeschool educators and grown-up players. It is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Children may play the game and use the printed sheets; nothing on paper reports back to us, and game progress stays on the device. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, email us and we will delete it.

How long we keep data

Analytics data is kept in aggregate for up to 14 months and then deleted automatically. Emails are kept only as long as they are useful for answering you.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal information we hold about you, to object to or restrict how it is used, to receive a copy of it, or to opt out of its sale or sharing. These rights apply under the EU and UK GDPR, the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended, the Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut and Utah privacy acts, and comparable laws. Email us to use any of them; we'll answer within 30 days.
