Read the spelling list
The pattern: The suffixes ful (full of) and less (without) turn nouns into describing words: hopeful, hopeless.
Ful and less are suffixes, word parts added to the end of a base word. Ful means full of and less means without, so a helpful person gives help and a helpless person has none. Both turn a noun, such as help, care or hope, into an adjective, a word that describes something. Most ful and less words come in pairs, which makes them useful for vocabulary as well as spelling.
The list is split into two groups. The ful group has beautiful, wonderful, powerful, careful, helpful, grateful, thankful and peaceful. The less group has homeless, useless, wireless, hopeless, pointless, careless and restless. One spelling rule matters: the suffix ful has one l, even though the word full has two. Less keeps its two s's. Students who write beautifull or usefull are mixing the two.

Words worth a closer look
- beautifulBeauty changes to beauti before the suffix, so the y becomes i. It is the longest word in the ful group, and the vowels come thick and fast.
- gratefulGratitude and grateful share a root, but the spelling is grate plus ful, with the e kept.
- restlessRest plus less, someone who cannot rest. Meaning follows the pieces exactly.
- wirelessWire plus less, without wires. A word children see on devices, which helps it stick.
- faithfulFaith plus ful. Only one l, which students tend to double.
Teaching it
The single l in ful is the mistake nearly every class makes. Write full on the board, then show it shrinking to ful when it joins a base word, and let students say the difference aloud. When the base word ends in y, the y changes to i: beauty becomes beautiful. Those words need extra attention.
A paired-word activity works well: students pick a noun such as care, hope or help and write both the ful and less word, then use each in a sentence with opposite meaning. In hangman, tell players the suffix and they will spend their guesses on the front half. Words like wireless and stainless are good for the older students, since they require knowing that the base word was a noun.
