Ancient Egypt Hangman Words
Pharaohs, pyramids, gods and the Nile as hangman words, from sphinx to hieroglyph. Play online or print a sheet with an answer key for ancient history.
Read the word list
Egypt appears in nearly every elementary and middle school history course, and this list follows the standard unit: the pharaohs and queens, the pyramids and temples, the gods, the Nile and the writing system. It leaves out the funeral side of the topic so the words are suitable for any age.
Short, familiar answers such as ankh, nile, giza and cat start young players on easy wins. Names like Tutankhamun, Nefertiti and Akhenaten are a real test, since they are long and have unusual letter combinations, and even confident spellers rarely write them correctly from memory. Sphinx has a single vowel and the awkward x at the end, which makes it harder than most five and six letter words.
79 entries. Our solver needed 2.8 wrong guesses on average: 21 easy, 45 medium and 13 hard. The toughest is king tut (12 misses), the quickest hieroglyph (0).

Words worth a closer look
- sphinxOne vowel in six letters, with x at the end and the ph pronounced as f. A strong choice for players who always open with a, e and i.
- hieroglyphFrom Greek words meaning sacred carving. Ten letters with both a repeated h and an uncommon y; players tend to guess the first few vowels and then stall.
- papyrusThe reed plant used to make writing sheets, and the root of our word paper. The p appears twice and the y sits in the middle, so the word is easier than it looks.
- rosettaThe Rosetta Stone, found in 1799, carried the same text in three scripts, and Champollion used it to read hieroglyphs in the 1820s. The double t is an easy spelling slip.
- tutankhamunBecame pharaoh as a child, around the age of nine. At eleven letters with the unusual nkh in the middle, it is one of the hardest names on the list.
- ankhThe looped cross that stood for life in Egyptian writing and art. Four letters, with one vowel, so it is a good opener.
- nileThe river flows north, from central Africa to the Mediterranean Sea, which surprises students who assume rivers run south. Only four letters, so it suits any age.
- pharaohPronounced like faro, but spelled with ph and the tricky aoh ending. A frequent misspelling is pharoh.
Using this list in class
The list matches a typical ancient Egypt unit in grades three to six. Students can research one name from the list, for instance Nefertiti or Khufu, then share a fact to earn the right to pick the next word. A wall map of Egypt along the Nile helps for place names like Giza, Luxor and Aswan.
Hieroglyphs make a natural pairing: after a round, give students a simple alphabet chart and let them write their own names as hieroglyphs. The phrases such as lower egypt and upper egypt can lead into a talk about why the Nile shaped where people lived.
