Read the word list

Sight word lists for kindergarten vary by school, state and program. Many programs use the Dolch pre-primer and primer levels, and that is what this page offers: 40 pre-primer words plus 52 primer words, 92 in all. Your own school may use a different list or a different order, so check before you print.

In practice, few kindergartners learn all 92 in a year. A common pattern is to start with the pre-primer words in the first half of the year and add primer words as the children become secure. Words like the, a, I, and, can and see go first because they let a child read a first sentence.

The hangman game works with the full set or with smaller groups you choose from the worksheet. For this age, an adult usually runs the game, reading the clues and letting a child guess.

92 entries. Our solver needed 5.8 wrong guesses on average: 13 easy, 23 medium and 56 hard. The toughest is be (16 misses), the quickest a (0).

Teaching it

Short and frequent is the rule. Four to six new words a week, reviewed each day for a couple of minutes, beats a long session. Start with the words your students can already partly decode: can, big, red, run, and then add the few heart words like said and you.

Keep the game oral for the youngest. The adult says the word, the child names a letter, and together they say each letter as it appears. Printables give a quieter alternative at a table. Move on from a word when the child can read it in a sentence, in a sentence and not just on a list.
