The pattern: The suffix ment turns a verb into a noun: enjoy becomes enjoyment.
The suffix ment turns a verb into a noun. Enjoy becomes enjoyment, agree becomes agreement, develop becomes development. The word usually names the result or the act: a payment is something paid, a movement is the act of moving, a statement is something stated. Because ment attaches to a whole verb, the base word stays visible, which makes spelling easier than it looks.
This list gathers thirty words, including government, development, department, management, treatment, equipment, argument and achievement. Fourth grade is when students start meeting these in social studies and science, where abstract nouns carry the content. A few spellings need attention: argument drops the e from argue, and judgment is written with or without the e depending on the dictionary.

Words worth a closer look
- governmentThe word where students most often drop the n: gov-ern-ment. The verb is govern.
- argumentDrops the e of argue. The one regular ment word that changes its base.
- judgmentJudge plus ment, with the e dropped in American spelling. Some dictionaries also accept judgement.
- departmentFrom depart. Students often spell it as deparment, losing the t.
- excitementExcite plus ment keeps the e, so the silent e sits in the middle of the word.
Teaching it
Teach the sum first: verb plus ment. Ask students to find the verb in each word and to say whether the base keeps its e. Words like achievement and agreement keep the e of the base, while argument loses it, and that single exception is worth a whole minute. The most common mistake is writing mant or ment with the wrong vowel in an unstressed syllable, as in goverment.
In hangman, ment is easy to get at the end, so let players guess the beginning first. Government is the one word where students habitually forget the n before the m, so it makes a good closer. Print the worksheet and have students write the base verb beside each noun.
