Read the spelling list
The pattern: The suffix ous means full of: danger becomes dangerous. It is said /us/.
The suffix ous means full of or having the quality of. Danger plus ous gives dangerous, fame gives famous, nerve gives nervous, and joy gives joyous. It turns a noun into a describing word, and it is pronounced /us/ with a weak vowel that gives no clue to the spelling. That unstressed ending is exactly why it needs practice: the ear hears us, but the correct letters are o-u-s.
The thirty words here include various, serious, obvious, curious, delicious, generous, mysterious and tremendous. Many appear in everyday reading, which is why fourth grade is the place to teach them. Some change the base before the ending: fame loses its e (famous), mystery changes its y to i (mysterious), and nerve keeps its e (nervous). Seeing those changes side by side makes the spelling a small puzzle rather than a memory test.

Words worth a closer look
- dangerousDanger plus ous. A good model word because the base is fully visible and nothing changes.
- famousFame loses its e before ous. Compare with nervous, where nerve is spelled without the final e too.
- deliciousThe sound before the ending is /sh/, spelled ci. A frequent misspelling is delishous.
- variousVary changes to various: the y becomes i. Students often write varyous.
- mysteriousMystery drops the y and adds ious, so the word has three syllables with an i of its own.
Teaching it
Ask students to find the noun inside the adjective first, then say what changed. Danger, fame, nerve, mystery and fury all hide inside their ous words. The most frequent mistake is writing us alone (dangerus), or using ious where only ous is needed. A useful distinction: when the sound before the ending is /sh/ or /ch/, as in delicious or ambitious, the spelling often uses ious or eous instead.
For hangman, let players find the ending quickly and then work out the first half; the ous ending makes long words like unconscious or prestigious easier than short ones. Print the worksheet and ask students to turn five nouns into ous words, such as adding ous to danger.
