Read the spelling list
The pattern: The ending ture is said /cher/: picture, nature, adventure.
The ending ture is pronounced /cher/, as in picture, nature and adventure. The t is not heard as a t at all, which is why students write cher or chur at first. It comes from Latin and is nearly always the end of a noun, such as future, culture, feature, creature or signature. A few come straight from verbs, as in capture and depart, which gives departure.
The thirty words on this list include future, picture, culture, nature, feature, temperature, literature, adventure, architecture, agriculture and furniture. Most show up in fifth grade science and reading, where students write about temperature and creatures and the nature of things. Because the sound and the spelling do not match, the list is an exercise in memory rather than phonics, and the best way to learn it is to see the same four letters many times.

Words worth a closer look
- temperatureFour syllables, and the one that vanishes in speech is the third, so students write tempature. Say tem-per-a-ture.
- pictureThe pitcher spelling is a different word. Picture ends in ture.
- adventureVenture is a smaller word inside: ad plus venture.
- furnitureFurnish becomes furniture, with a u added. Students sometimes write furnature.
- literatureFive syllables, with the third often swallowed in speech.
Teaching it
Say the ending slowly: t-u-r-e, not cher. Pair each word with its sound: pic-ture, na-ture. The most frequent misspellings are the sound-based ones, such as pitcher or picher for picture, and nachure. Another error is a missing u or e, as in tempature or temperture. Syllable breaks help with the long words: tem-per-a-ture, lit-er-a-ture.
In hangman, the ending can be guessed early because t, u, r and e are common, so the challenge is the letters before it. Print the worksheet and ask students to read each word aloud in the cher sound, then spell it with the letters.
