Art Hangman Words
Art hangman words covering materials, techniques, the elements of art and principles of design, for art teachers and families to play or print.
Read the word list
Elementary and middle school art classes teach a steady list of terms: the materials students use, the techniques they practice, and the elements and principles that describe how a picture is built. This list gathers all three. Words such as canvas, easel, charcoal and watercolor name the tools of the room. Line, shape, texture, contrast and balance come from the elements and principles of design that many curricula use.
Difficulty ranges widely. Hue, kiln and clay are short and have few vowels, so they can last longer than their size suggests. Perspective, foreground and impressionism are long enough to give older students a real challenge. The phrases, including color wheel and still life, are useful when a teacher wants a round that reviews a concept, since each one points to a lesson students may already have completed.
73 entries. Our solver needed 2.2 wrong guesses on average: 32 easy, 30 medium and 11 hard. The toughest is clay (7 misses), the quickest ceramic (0).

Words worth a closer look
- frescoFrom the Italian for fresh: a painting made on wet plaster so the color becomes part of the wall. It is a six-letter word with only two vowels.
- easelComes from the Dutch ezel, which means donkey, because the frame carries the canvas the way a donkey carries a load. Five letters with e appearing twice.
- paletteNot to be confused with pallet, a wooden platform. The double l and double t in palette are the usual spelling trap, and the word is also the range of colors an artist uses.
- silhouetteNamed for Etienne de Silhouette, an 18th century French finance minister. The silent h and the ou pair make it one of the harder spellings on the list.
- calligraphyFrom Greek roots meaning beautiful writing. Eleven letters with a double l and a y near the end.
- origamiA Japanese word made of ori, fold, and kami, paper. Four of its seven letters are vowels, so it often falls in the first three guesses.
- kilnFour letters and a single vowel. The l and n are consonants beginners tend to try late, which makes it a deceptively hard word.
- perspectiveFrom the Latin perspicere, to look through. Linear perspective, the trick of making flat paper show depth, is one of the central ideas taught in elementary art.
Using this list in class
An art teacher can open the first lesson of a drawing unit with the materials: pencil, charcoal, pastel, brush, easel and canvas. Ask students to hold up the item whenever it is solved. This turns the game into a physical vocabulary check and works well with younger grades who need to learn what each tool is called.
For an elements of art unit, play line, shape, form, space, texture, value and hue as a set, then ask students to find one example of each in a picture on the wall. A homeroom teacher on a rainy day can print the sheet as a quiet table activity. Families visiting a museum can use the words as a scavenger list, checking off each one when they spot it in a gallery.
