Camping Hangman Words
Camping hangman words covering gear, campfire cooking, trails, wildlife and the night sky, ideal for scout meetings, car rides and rainy tent days.
Read the word list
Camping vocabulary is a practical kind of word list. It covers the gear you pack, the food you cook over a fire, the places you hike or paddle, and the animals and stars you see once the lights are out. The words are the same ones a family would say aloud while loading a car, which makes the list easy for young children to follow and enjoyable for adults to play along.
The range is wide. Tent, map, lake and owl are short and friendly. Binoculars, constellation, hammock and marshmallow have repeated letters and awkward spellings that give older children a challenge. Phrases such as sleeping bag, picnic table and first aid kit work well when the group is waiting for a fire to catch, because the gaps in the answer can be shared out around the circle without anyone needing a screen.
74 entries. Our solver needed 3.0 wrong guesses on average: 17 easy, 39 medium and 18 hard. The toughest is map (11 misses), the quickest campfire (0).

Words worth a closer look
- hammockA word that came into English through Spanish from a Taino language of the Caribbean. The double m and the ck ending make it easy to misspell.
- canoeAlso reached English through Spanish, from a Caribbean word for a dugout boat. Four letters with three vowels, so it falls quickly.
- kayakFrom the Inuit word qayaq. The k appears twice and the y in the middle is the letter players find last, even though the a is guessed at once.
- marshmallowThe name comes from the marsh mallow, a plant whose root was once used to make the sweet. Eleven letters with a double l, which makes it long but not hard.
- binocularsFrom Latin bini, two by two, and oculus, eye. Ten letters with the b at the start and the r and s at the end that players guess late.
- constellationFrom Latin roots meaning together with stars. Thirteen letters with t and l each appearing twice, best kept for older players or a family star-gazing night.
- kindlingSmall dry sticks used to start a fire, from an old word meaning to set alight. The d and g are the letters players typically guess late.
- owlOnly three letters, and only one of them a vowel. A player who opens with e and a will use up two guesses before reaching the o.
Using this list in class
A scout leader or outdoor education teacher can use the list on the evening before a trip: play the gear words, tent, tarp, stakes, mallet, lantern and sleeping bag, and ask each child to say where it goes in the pack. Printed sheets are handy for the bus ride, and the answer key helps parents who are not sure of the spelling.
In a classroom, a nature unit can use trail, forest, meadow, river, ranger and wilderness to prepare for a field day. A teacher can add the night sky words constellation, firefly and cricket for a science link. Families at the campsite can play out loud with no paper at all, passing the turn around the fire while the marshmallows toast.
