Read the word list

Summer break is when families need a game that works anywhere, so this list is built around things children actually do: swimming, camping, road trips, fishing and cooking outdoors. Beach words, backyard words and picnic food each get a share, and the list ends with a few weather words like humid, scorching and thunderstorm.

Pool, shade and towel are short enough for young players. Cantaloupe, lifeguard and thunderstorm test spelling and persistence. Snorkel, kayak and hammock sit in the middle: each has a k or a double letter, and none of them gives way to the usual guessing order of e, then a, then t. The phrases include ice cream and summer camp, where the word break helps players narrow things down.

71 entries. Our solver needed 2.8 wrong guesses on average: 26 easy, 28 medium and 17 hard. The toughest is ice pop (12 misses), the quickest sunscreen (0).

Using this list in class

This list works well for the last week of school or a summer reading program, when students are ready for something lighter. Summer-school teachers can use a round of vocabulary words each morning, starting with the short ones and finishing with cantaloupe or thunderstorm for the class challenge.

At home, the printable sheet suits a car trip, a waiting room or a rainy day at the lake. Parents can take turns choosing the word from the answer key and giving the category as a clue, such as picnic food or things at the beach, which keeps younger children in the game while older ones guess harder letters.
