Read the word list

Halloween lists tend to drift toward the grim, and this one deliberately does not. It sticks to the parts families and classrooms actually enjoy: costumes, carving, candy, autumn night and the friendly end of spooky. Skeleton, cobweb and cauldron are about as dark as it gets.

The range runs from three-letter words like bat and owl up to disguise, flashlight and mysterious. Short words keep younger players in the game, but a few of them are deceptive: witch and ghost both contain letter groups that players rarely guess early. The hardest entries tend to be the ones with few vowels, such as spooky, or with a silent letter that the player cannot predict. The phrases, like trick or treat and pumpkin patch, give a whole class something to shout out together.

71 entries. Our solver needed 3.3 wrong guesses on average: 18 easy, 31 medium and 22 hard. The toughest is fog (12 misses), the quickest skeleton (0).

Using this list in class

Halloween falls early enough in the school year that this list suits any grade from kindergarten up. A class party is the obvious moment: put the phrases on the board and let teams earn a point for each solved round. Keep the short words for kindergarten and first grade, and give older students the longer ones, such as mysterious and flashlight.

For spelling, the list has a useful set of compound words (broomstick, flashlight, pillowcase, doorbell) and a group of silent or tricky letter patterns (witch, ghost, disguise, scarecrow). Printed sheets also work as a quiet fill-in activity on the day when everyone is in costume and attention is elsewhere.
