Read the word list

Dessert words are a gift to a hangman list because many of them were borrowed from French, Italian and German, and their spellings do not follow English rules. Cake, pie and fudge are easy. Meringue, tiramisu, cannoli and strudel look nothing like how they sound, so even strong readers need most of their guesses.

The list also includes the toppings and flavors that turn up in school bake sales: sprinkles, frosting, caramel, cinnamon and marshmallow. Phrases such as banana split, apple pie and birthday cake are good for group play because everyone can see the shape of the answer early. Children tend to stay engaged with this category longer than with most others, and that makes it a dependable choice for the end of a lesson.

66 entries. Our solver needed 2.9 wrong guesses on average: 25 easy, 25 medium and 16 hard. The toughest is key lime pie (12 misses), the quickest toffee (0).

Using this list in class

Dessert words work well for the last lesson before a holiday or after a bake sale. For a spelling extension, ask students to find the words with silent letters, such as dough, or with borrowed endings, such as ue in meringue and ini in biscotti. The hangman round gives them a reason to notice those patterns.

Families can pair the list with a baking afternoon. Choose one word, bake it, and play the round while the oven warms up. Printing the sheet with the answer key is useful for a party table where children are waiting for cake.
