Read the word list

The fourth hundred is where the Dolch lists nearly disappear: only 8 of the 100 words are on one, namely black, together, car, five, kind, hand, girl and pretty. What replaces them is a mix of everyday words (food, room, friend, nice) and more formal ones (information, important, international, university, research).

These are words that readers find in textbooks, websites and news stories. Many are long, with common endings: -tion, -ant, -al. Students at the top of elementary school and in middle school are the right audience, along with adult learners of English who want the words that turn up in everyday reading.

Several of them are good spelling challenges. Remember and understand have tricky middles. Probably drops a syllable when spoken, so it gets misspelled as probly. International is a long word with a short sound pattern that rewards chunking: inter, nation, al.

100 entries. Our solver needed 4.0 wrong guesses on average: 19 easy, 45 medium and 36 hard. The toughest is book (13 misses), the quickest least (0).

Words worth a closer look

Teaching it

Try the long words first. They are easier in hangman, so students get early success, and then the harder short ones (oh, win, air, bit, hit) feel manageable. Use the difficulty score to pick: a word with a score of 5 or more is worth a second look.

Link spelling to meaning where you can. Information is built from inform, research from search, international from nation. A student who sees the root remembers the spelling better than one who memorizes every letter. Ask them to find the small word hidden in each big one.
