Read the word list

The last band finishes our list at word 500. Dolch words return here a little, 16 of them: red, six, saw, soon, ask, buy, baby, father, fire, light, morning, myself, street, watch, woman and bring. That may surprise you. Red, six and saw are simple, but modern text uses them less often than words like community or development.

The rest are mostly general vocabulary: happy, human, question, special, future, reason, check, report, easy. A few are plainly adult, such as police, million, development and political. They are real words that appear in any newspaper, and they are family-safe, which is how they passed our filter.

This band is a good target for confident spellers. Words such as although, according, available and experience are longer and rich in silent or doubled letters, so they can look tough on the page but go quickly in hangman, where the common letters give them away.

100 entries. Our solver needed 3.7 wrong guesses on average: 24 easy, 39 medium and 37 hard. The toughest is saw (11 misses), the quickest whether (0).

Teaching it

Use this band when the earlier ones feel too easy. For older students and adults, set a goal of ten words a session and note the ones with a high difficulty score. Words like although and according make good dictation, where you read a sentence aloud and the student writes it.

Pair the game with reading. Choose five words from the list, find them in a newspaper, a story or a web page, and underline them. Seeing a word several times in different places is how it goes from something you can spell to something you recognize in an instant.
