Read the spelling list
The pattern: One-syllable words of four to six letters with a single vowel, e, saying its short sound, often with a blend or digraph.
Short e in first grade is the same sound as in bed, now inside longer words such as when, them, best, next, left, went, check, fresh, dress and length. Each word here has one syllable, four to six letters and e as its only vowel. Blends and digraphs such as st, nt, ft, th, sh and ck do the new work.
The list was built from the pattern, then each word was confirmed against a pronunciation dictionary so none has a different vowel. Frequency data placed them in a first grade band. Short e is a vowel that children spell correctly more often than short i, but they still stumble on endings: ss in dress, press and mess, ck in check and neck, and nd and nt in send, spent and rent. The few oddballs, such as debt with its silent b, belong later in the week.

Words worth a closer look
- whenBegins with wh, which most American speakers say as plain /w/. Pair it with then, them and when to show the th and wh starts.
- debtThe b is silent. Children cannot get this one by sounding it out, so teach it as a word to remember.
- lengthContains both ng and th, and the e is still short. A challenging word, best for the end of the unit.
- dressDouble s after a short vowel, in line with press, mess and stress. Ask children to spot the pattern across the group.
- checkCh at the start and ck at the end, two different sounds spelled with the letter c. A good word for slow tapping out.
- nextEnds with xt, where x holds two sounds. Children often write nekst or net, so go slowly through the final blend.
Teaching it
Teach by ending. First the common final blends: nt (went, sent, rent, spent), st (best, west, rest, test) and nd (send, spend, tend). Then ck (check, neck), then double s (dress, press, mess, stress). Give children a card for each ending and have them sort the words as you read them aloud.
Typical errors are dropping the nasal letter (set for sent, wet for went), writing k alone at the end (chek) and writing a single s after short e in dress. Hangman rounds work best when you tell the class the ending type first, for instance that the next word ends in a ck. The printable lets you set a short test of eight or ten words.
