Read the spelling list
The pattern: One-syllable words of four to six letters with a single vowel, o, saying its short sound, often with a blend or digraph.
Short o in first grade appears in words like stop, rock, drop, spot, shop, block, clock, frog, plot and pond. Each word is one syllable with o as its only vowel, and the surrounding letters are the new challenge: blends such as st, dr, bl and fr, the digraph sh, and the endings ck and nd. The vowel sounds like ah in most American accents.
The list was built by pattern and each word was checked against a pronunciation dictionary. Frequency data placed them in a first grade band. Some words have spellings that cannot be sounded out directly, such as knock with its silent k and prompt with the p between m and t. Those are good to teach as special cases, after the regular ones are secure. Others, like boss, are straightforward but show the doubled s after a short vowel.

Words worth a closer look
- knockThe k is silent and it ends with ck. Children can only spell it by remembering the kn start, so show it beside know.
- shopSh is one sound from two letters. Compare with stop, where s and t keep separate sounds, to show digraph versus blend.
- bossDoubled s after a short vowel, just as in miss and glass. It also gives a short o sound that some children spell with a.
- promptThree consonants at the end. Many children skip the p and write promt, so say it slowly and tap out each sound.
- notchShort vowel before tch, the same ending as match and catch. Ask children what these words share.
- frogA strong picture word with fr at the start. Good for a quick drawing and spelling activity.
Teaching it
Begin with the words children can build from kindergarten pieces: stop and drop from top and pop, plot and slot from got and lot. Then add endings: ck (rock, lock, clock, block, shock), nd (pond, bond, fond) and tch (notch). Handle the silent letters last, because they need memory more than decoding.
Typical errors are writing a for o, because the open mouth sounds are similar, writing c for ck at the end (roc), and leaving out blend letters (sop for stop). In a hangman round, give away the o and then challenge the group to guess the beginning blend. The printable gives a short written check to finish the week.
