Read the spelling list
The pattern: One-syllable words of four to six letters with a single vowel, u, saying its short sound, often with a blend or digraph.
Short u is the vowel in cup and bus, now used in longer words: just, must, much, such, club, stuff, trust, luck, jump, lunch, truck, brush and drum. Every word is one syllable with u as the only vowel, and most carry a blend (st, nch, mp, tr) or a digraph (ch, sh, ck). The list is a good match for first grade, when children are reading and spelling bigger chunks.
The words were chosen by pattern and checked against a pronunciation dictionary so the u really has its short sound. Frequency data placed them in a first grade band. Because the vowel stays the same, the real work is the consonants around it, and that is where children slip. Stuff ends in ff, luck ends in ck, and lunch and bunch end with nch. Seeing these in groups shows the endings repeating.

Words worth a closer look
- muchThe ch here follows a short vowel, an exception to the tch pattern. Such is the same. Both are frequent in children writing.
- stuffEnds with ff, a doubled final consonant after a short vowel. Ask children to find other words with doubled endings, such as class.
- trustStarts with tr and ends with st, with only one vowel between. A good word for slow tapping out.
- lunchEnds in nch, with an n that many children miss. A word they already use, so it is easy to remember.
- brushBr at the start and sh at the end, so it combines a blend and a digraph. Compare the two sounds.
- hungThe u is short, though it is followed by ng. Group it with the ng words such as king and ring on the short i list.
Teaching it
Sort the words by ending. Words that end in ck (luck, duck, stuck, truck, struck) go together, as do nch words (lunch, bunch, punch), mp words (jump, pump) and st words (just, must, trust, dust). Children read the groups aloud, then write them from dictation.
Frequent errors are writing o for u (jomp for jump), spelling lunch without the n, and using c instead of ck in luck. Much and such are used constantly in writing, so check them separately. In a hangman round, call out the blend or digraph first, then let the class guess the rest. Use the printable sheet for a quick Friday check.
