Hangman words
6 Letter Hangman Words
Six-letter hangman words ranked by difficulty, from bought and bright to oxygen and puzzle. Words that stay medium-hard even with common letters.
Read the word list
At six letters the odds shift toward the guesser. The solver averages 2.5 wrong guesses on six-letter words, and e appears in 62.5 percent of the 2,056 six-letter words in our top 15,000. A player who opens with e, r, a and t will hit something on almost every guess. Losing a six-letter word takes either a rare letter or an unusual pattern.
That is why the 60 words here score only 5 or 6, a step below the shorter lists. They are the survivors: words where the usual letters do not help. Bought and bright top the list, both with a silent gh and a lone vowel. Button and mirror repeat a letter, and hockey and monkey end in a y that is easy to leave to last.
The hardest list took its twelve toughest six-letter words first, so you will not find wicked, suffer or jungle here. This is the next band down: still tougher than the average word, but fair for a group that knows how the game works.
60 entries. Our solver needed 5.7 wrong guesses on average: 0 easy, 0 medium and 60 hard. The toughest is spring (6 misses), the quickest though (5).

Words worth a closer look
- boughtScores 6. The ough sequence is irregular, and the solver needs several guesses before the g and h show up.
- brightScores 6. Like bought, a silent gh, and just one vowel. A player who opens with vowels finds the i and then stalls.
- buttonScores 6. The double t is not a first guess, and the u and o are mid-ranked vowels.
- mirrorScores 6. The repeated r gives it only four different letters, so there are few chances to hit.
- oxygenScores 6. An x and a y, both uncommon, in a word that otherwise has plenty of e, o, n and g.
- monkeyScores 6. Ends in ey, with a k that most players reach late. The first m and o often land, leaving the rest unsolved.
- puzzleScores 6. A double z, which is a late guess, and the l and e of the ending are the only easy letters.
- purpleScores 6. The p appears twice and u is the only vowel apart from the final e.
How to use this list
Six letters is a good length for group games where players take turns. The rounds last long enough for everyone to guess a letter, and the setter has a real chance of winning with a good pick. It is also a sensible level for upper-elementary spelling, since many of these words follow patterns worth discussing.
To mix things up, assign words by letters rather than by difficulty. Choose all the words with a double letter (mirror, horror, puzzle, muzzle) for one round, or all those with a silent letter for another. That turns the round into a spelling lesson without changing the rules.
