Seven letters is the point where hangman stops being a gamble. The solver averages 1.7 wrong guesses on seven-letter words, and e shows up in 65.8 percent of the 2,058 of them in our top 15,000, with a in 50.6 percent. Most words at this length fall in a guess or two, which is why the toughest ones here score only 4 or 5.
The list holds the 60 highest-scoring seven-letter words. Brought, quality, complex, chamber, colonel and comfort lead with 5. Below them, at 4, come words like through, without, thought, problem and husband. They are all ordinary vocabulary, and they share a few traps: silent letters (through, thought), an unexpected spelling (colonel, which is said as kernel) and a run of consonants in the middle (complex, chamber).
Words from the hardest list are excluded, so the toughest seven-letter word on that page, paddock, will not appear here.

Words worth a closer look
- qualityScores 5. The q is rare, and once the u and a are found the l, i, t and y still have to be guessed one by one.
- complexScores 5. A cluster of consonants and an x at the end. Players who find the o and e still have little to go on.
- chamberScores 5. The m and b sit in the middle of the word, and the ch at the start is an unusual pair to guess.
- colonelScores 5. Pronounced kernel, spelled with two l's and two o's. Great for spelling lessons: the sound and the letters do not match.
- throughScores 4. The ough sequence has a silent gh and only one vowel guess. A good set to study with through and thought.
- husbandScores 4. A common word with u and a as vowels and a d that arrives late.

How to use this list
These words suit older elementary students and above. They are long enough to make the game feel substantial, but a player who thinks carefully about the pattern will usually win with a few guesses to spare. In a classroom they make a useful vocabulary check, since the group has to know the word to recognise it.
For spelling practice, ask students to write the word after the round without looking. Brought, through and thought make a neat set, since each has the ough sequence with a different sound.
