Hangman words
Hardest Hangman Words
The hardest hangman words in everyday English, ranked by how many wrong guesses a sensible player makes. Play the list online or print it.
Read the word list
These are the words that cost the solver the most wrong guesses. Pop and fax top the list at 17, and nothing on it scores below 6. Every word is ordinary: you have said all of them this week. That is the point. Hangman is hard when a word's pattern fits many other words and the common letters miss, not when the word is obscure.
To build the list we scored the 15,000 most common words, took the 2,000 highest scorers, and kept the top ones with one rule: no more than 12 of any word length. Without the cap, the list would be nothing but three-letter words, which dominate the top of the scoreboard. With it, you get 12 words each at three, four, five and six letters, plus two longer ones, paddock and brought. The list is sorted hardest first.
Look for shared habits. Doubled letters (buzz, jazz, fluffy, puppy), a y at the end (lucky, fuzzy, baby) and a repeated vowel (book, zoo, mummy) all send a sensible player's early guesses to the wrong place.
50 entries. Our solver needed 10.7 wrong guesses on average: 0 easy, 0 medium and 50 hard. The toughest is pop (17 misses), the quickest brought (5).

Words worth a closer look
- popThe solver made 17 wrong guesses, joint highest on the page. Three letters fit hundreds of words, and the p_p shape gives no push toward any one vowel.
- faxAlso 17 wrong guesses. The x appears in about 2 percent of common words, so a sensible player has tried most of the alphabet before reaching it.
- zooScores 15. The z is rare, and the double o fills two slots from a single guess, which only helps once a player has found it.
- buzzThe solver made 13 wrong guesses. A double z in a four-letter word with one vowel shares very little with the words around it.
- jazzScores 12. Same shape as buzz, with a j that appears in only about 1 percent of common words. Good for players who think they know the trick.
- fluffyThe hardest six-letter word here, with 7 wrong guesses. The double f and the final y are both easy to miss for anyone who opens with vowels.
- paddockScores 6. One of the two words over six letters, kept in by the cap. The double d and the ck ending are not what a letter-frequency player tries early.
How to use this list
Use this list with players who already win most games. Because the words are common, nobody can say it was unfair: the answer was a word they know. Expect many losses even with a generous gallows, since a score of 17 is far beyond the usual six or seven wrong guesses.
For something gentler, the hard hangman words list holds the next tier, scoring 8 or 9. For a rare-letter challenge, try the J, Q, X and Z list. Players who want to improve should read the strategy guide, because understanding why pop beats you is the fastest way to stop losing to it.

- Hard Hangman WordsHard hangman words that trip up good players: common four-letter words like walk, huge and zinc, scored by the wrong guesses a solver makes.
- 3 Letter Hangman WordsThree-letter hangman words ranked by difficulty, from lab and jet to bin and zip. Short words fit many patterns, so they cost the most guesses.
- Hangman Words with J, Q, X and ZHangman words built around J, Q, X or Z, such as quiz, flex, pizza and galaxy. Rare letters make a word hard to guess until you think about them.
- Hangman Strategy for Guessers and SettersHangman strategy built on data from 15,000 common words: which letters to guess first by word length, when to switch, and how to pick hard words as setter.
- Short Hangman WordsShort hangman words that are harder than they look: three-letter words like was, why, key and dog, ranked by solver wrong guesses. Play or print.
- Hangman Words Without VowelsHangman words with no a, e, i, o or u, such as why, fly, gym, myth and rhythm. A short list that turns the usual vowel-first strategy upside down.
