Read the word list
Most adults can beat an easy list without thinking, so this one is deliberately harder. It holds real words that are hard to spell or hard to guess: onomatopoeia, conscientious, idiosyncrasy and rhythm, plus rarer treats such as quixotic and bellwether. Everything is a genuine dictionary word, and nothing here is vulgar or off-color.
Difficulty comes in two forms. Some words are hard because they are long and full of unusual spellings, such as questionnaire and miscellaneous. Others are hard because the letters hide: rhythm and mnemonic lean on consonants, so the usual strategy of calling a, e, i, o and u first gets players nowhere. Mix of both kinds keeps a long session interesting, since a player cannot lean on one strategy for the whole list.
49 entries. Our solver needed 1.0 wrong guesses on average: 13 easy, 3 medium and 1 hard. The toughest is rhythm (5 misses), the quickest pneumonia (0).

Words worth a closer look
- rhythmSix letters with no a, e, i, o or u. The y is the only vowel, so a player who opens with vowels will lose several guesses at once.
- onomatopoeiaA word that imitates a sound, such as buzz or splash. Thirteen letters with five o's, so o is the best first guess.
- quixoticIdealistic in an impractical way, from the novel Don Quixote. The q and x are rare letters that show up quickly if a player is brave.
- conscientiousCareful and diligent. Thirteen letters with the sci cluster in the middle, a very common misspelling.
- questionnaireA list of questions. The double n is the classic spelling trap.
- miscellaneousA mix of different things. The sc in the middle and the ous ending are the usual stumbling blocks.
- embarrassA famous double-letter trap: two r's and two s's.
How to use this list
Good for a party, a family evening or an office break. Give each player a printed sheet and take turns being the word-setter, picking a word from the list for the others to solve. Keep score by wrong guesses.
For a harder game, ask each guesser to define the word before they take the last letter. If they cannot, the setter reads out the meaning. Players who like language will often ask where a word comes from, so a dictionary on hand makes the game last longer.
