Read the word list

This list draws on names, places and objects that appear in the best known stories of the Bible, spelled the way most common English translations spell them. It is meant for Sunday school, homeschool and family use, and it keeps to the names themselves rather than making claims about belief, so it can be used by families of different traditions or by teachers covering the Bible as literature.

Ark, Eve, Job and Ruth are short and quick. Moses, David, Daniel and Noah are the names most children know. Longer entries take more work: Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth and Nineveh are places with unusual letter patterns, and Abraham, Solomon and Timothy are good tests of spelling. Mustard, manna and covenant are objects and ideas of medium length, so they fall in the middle of the difficulty range.

80 entries. Our solver needed 3.0 wrong guesses on average: 31 easy, 33 medium and 16 hard. The toughest is ark (11 misses), the quickest esther (0).

Using this list in class

Sunday school and homeschool teachers can use the list as a review after a unit on a book or a set of stories. After each word, the player names the story it belongs to or the person who is linked to it. For younger children, stick to the short names such as ark, eve, ruth and noah.

Older children can sort the answers into people, places and books, or arrange the Old Testament names in the order the stories appear in Genesis. In a literature class, the phrases such as good samaritan, prodigal son and tower of babel make a fine start for a talk about the many everyday expressions that came from Bible stories.
