Read the word list

This list is about the kitchen rather than the menu. It collects the verbs of cooking, such as simmer, knead, marinate and saute, the tools that go with them, from whisk and ladle to colander and ramekin, and the measures in a recipe: teaspoon, tablespoon, ounce and pinch. These are words children meet in a first cooking class and often misspell.

Some are easy to guess: stir, mix, bake and oven. Others have quirks that make good teaching moments. Knead begins with a silent k, colander has an unexpected a in the middle, and teaspoon and tablespoon are compound words that students sometimes split. The phrases, including measuring cup and preheat the oven, sound like recipe instructions and help students see the words in use.

70 entries. Our solver needed 3.8 wrong guesses on average: 18 easy, 31 medium and 21 hard. The toughest is mix (12 misses), the quickest marinate (0).

Using this list in class

Use this list in a family and consumer science class or any unit on following instructions. Have students read a simple recipe first, then play a round with the verbs and tools it contains. This connects spelling with the sequence of steps in a procedure.

For younger children, a cooking day makes the vocabulary physical. Hand each child a tool, ask them to guess its name from the blanks and then use it. Parents can use the measuring words to practice early fractions: a pinch, a dash and a teaspoon are very different amounts.
