Read the word list

Produce makes a tidy hangman category because the words are concrete, familiar from the grocery store and wildly uneven in difficulty. Pea, fig and kale are solved in a few guesses. Cauliflower, asparagus, artichoke and cantaloupe have tricky vowel runs, and zucchini has a double c that regularly trips up spellers.

The list keeps fruits and vegetables mixed together on purpose, so players cannot guess the category from the first few letters. Several answers sit on the border, which gives a teacher a conversation to run once the round is over: is a tomato a fruit, and what about a cucumber or a pumpkin? Phrases like sweet potato and butternut squash lengthen the game for older groups.

70 entries. Our solver needed 2.8 wrong guesses on average: 23 easy, 35 medium and 12 hard. The toughest is kale (10 misses), the quickest pineapple (0).

Using this list in class

Use the list in a nutrition unit or around a school garden project in grades one to five. After each round, ask students to sort the answers by color or by which part of the plant is eaten: root, leaf, stem, seed or fruit. This ties the spelling game to a science standard without extra prep.

At home, a game at the produce aisle works well: pick a word from the shopping list and let the children guess it before it goes in the cart. For older students, the border cases such as tomato, pumpkin and cucumber make a short botany lesson.
