Read the word list
Family words are among the first that children learn to read, so this list starts with names they know at home: mom, dad, sister, brother, baby, cousin. It then widens to relationships that take longer to learn, like nephew, niece, stepfather, godmother and spouse, and to the words families use for themselves, such as ancestor, generation, reunion and heritage.
That balance keeps the list useful across ages. A kindergartner can solve aunt, baby or twin without help, while a fourth grader can work through grandmother, descendant and stepsister. Several of the phrases, such as family tree, family reunion and bedtime story, give a fuller picture of home life, and they play well on a whiteboard when parents are in the room, since adults can join in with the longer answers.
70 entries. Our solver needed 2.6 wrong guesses on average: 29 easy, 30 medium and 11 hard. The toughest is baby (11 misses), the quickest father (0).

Words worth a closer look
- nieceFollows the old rule of i before e, which is useful to mention. Five letters with three vowels, so it falls quickly.
- nephewThe ph sounds like f or v depending on the speaker. A word that is easier to say than to spell, and the ph often gets written as f.
- siblingFrom an Old English word meaning relative. A handy word to know because it covers brothers and sisters in one.
- cousinThe ou makes a short u sound, the same as in country and young. Players who spell by sound sometimes write cuzzin.
- descendantEnds in ant, not ent, which is the usual spelling mistake. The word means a person who comes from a particular ancestor.
- ancestorA family member from long before your time. The word has a c that sounds like s, which can slow players who guess by sound.
- family treeA diagram that shows how people in a family are related. The first word matches the topic of the list, so players tend to guess it quickly.
- auntSome speakers say it like ant and others like ahnt. The au spelling matches neither sound, so young spellers often write ant.
Using this list in class
Use this list in the first weeks of school, when students are talking about their own families. After a word is solved, each student can say whether they have a person in that role, which turns the game into a short conversation. Teachers should keep in mind that families look different, so the stepfamily and foster words sit beside the others as equals.
The family tree phrase leads easily into a hands-on project: students draw their own tree with grandparents, parents and siblings, and the words from the list become labels. At home, families can play with the printed sheet at dinner, and grandparents love being asked to guess.
