Read the word list

Pets are a topic every child can talk about, which helps in a mixed-age group. It covers the common animals (dog, cat, rabbit, goldfish), the less common ones (gecko, ferret, chinchilla), the gear and food (leash, kennel, kibble) and the care words used by veterinarians and shelters. A handful of dog breeds are included for children who can name them all.

The spread of difficulty comes from the contrast between short and long words. Dog, cat and fur are done in a few guesses. Dachshund, chinchilla and veterinarian are demanding, and they teach spelling at the same time. Purr, meow and bark are short sound words with unusual patterns. The phrases include guinea pig and litter box, which give a group strong word-shape clues and make sense for a whiteboard round.

75 entries. Our solver needed 4.0 wrong guesses on average: 19 easy, 28 medium and 28 hard. The toughest is vet (13 misses), the quickest parakeet (0).

Using this list in class

A unit on pets or responsibility is an easy fit. Start by asking students which animals they would like to own, then play a round with the one most students pick. The care words, leash, kennel, groom and vaccine, work well for a discussion about what a pet needs each day.

In a library or reading corner, pair the list with a pet-themed read-aloud and let children guess the character's animal. At home, the printed sheet suits a family that is getting a first pet: take turns choosing a word and then talk about what that item or animal needs. The answer key makes it easy for a younger sibling to join in.
