Clothing Hangman Words
Clothes, fabrics and sewing words for hangman, from socks to corduroy. Play online with this list or print a sheet with an answer key for class or home.
Read the word list
Clothing is a topic children know from the closet, which makes it a friendly list for early readers and for students learning English. The words cover what we wear from head to toe, the fabrics those things are made from and the small parts such as buttons, zippers, collars and cuffs. A few more distant garments such as kimono, sari and poncho widen the range.
Hat, belt, coat and vest are short and quick. Sweater, jacket, sandals and raincoat sit in the middle. Corduroy, cardigan, windbreaker and jumpsuit take more effort because of long length or unusual letters, and sequin, tuxedo and bandana are the ones where spelling gets in the way. Fabric names such as denim, velvet, flannel and linen add a nice vocabulary step beyond the clothes themselves.
79 entries. Our solver needed 3.5 wrong guesses on average: 20 easy, 35 medium and 24 hard. The toughest is hem (10 misses), the quickest dress (0).

Words worth a closer look
- tuxedoNamed after Tuxedo Park, a community in New York, where the style became fashionable in the 1880s. The x in the middle is the letter players usually miss.
- pajamasThe word came into English from Hindi and Urdu through British India. American spelling is pajamas; British books use pyjamas, which is worth pointing out to students.
- denimA strong cotton cloth, and its name is traditionally linked to the French city of Nimes. Two vowels in five letters, so it falls fast.
- corduroyA ribbed cotton cloth. Eight letters with the o and r each appearing twice, so a correct guess of either one fills several spaces.
- sneakersSaid to be named because rubber soles let wearers move quietly. The ea pair is the usual spelling slip, since some students write it as ee.
- mittensLike gloves, but with the fingers together and a separate thumb. The double t in the middle fills two spaces at once when a player guesses t.
- bandanaA square cloth worn on the head or neck. The word has three a's among seven letters, so it is a classic first-guess-a win.
- cardiganA knitted jacket that opens at the front with buttons. It is often said to be named after the 7th Earl of Cardigan, a British nobleman.
Using this list in class
For a clothing or daily routines vocabulary unit, this list works well with ESL learners and kindergarten to second grade, since students can often point to the item in the room. Have a student hold up an item that matches the solved word, or place the word on a chart sorted into winter, summer and rain clothes.
Older students can sort the fabric words, cotton, wool, silk, linen and leather, by whether they come from plants or animals. A science link: ask which fabrics keep us warm and which keep us cool. At home, families can use the printed sheet during laundry sorting for a short family game.
