Read the word list

This list is made entirely of four-letter words, and the generator did not aim for that. We asked for common words of four letters or more with a solver score of 5 or higher, ordered them hardest first and kept the top 60. Every one turned out to be four letters long, because at that length the pattern still fits over a thousand words while the word itself is too short to reveal much.

The scores are 8 and 9. Walk, huge, wall, pull, zero and cave each cost the solver nine wrong guesses. They look easy, which is why they work: a word you can spell in your sleep still has to be guessed one letter at a time. Even after the first letter lands, a player often faces a dozen real candidates, such as wall, wake, walk and want.

Words already on the hardest list, such as book, buzz and jump, are left off, so the two pages never overlap. Three-letter words are excluded because they have their own list.

60 entries. Our solver needed 8.9 wrong guesses on average: 0 easy, 0 medium and 60 hard. The toughest is body (9 misses), the quickest with (8).

How to use this list

Use this list as a step up from the standard game. Players who breeze through the good hangman words will lose about as often as they win here, and losing to a word like huge feels fair rather than cheap. It also suits older students who have run out of easier lists.

A tip for your own play: when the pattern is four letters and the first guesses hit nothing, stop cycling through vowels. Think about common consonant endings such as ll, ck, mp and rm, and about the shapes shared by many words, like _ave and _ook. The strategy guide goes through the habit in more detail.
