Hangman Words with J, Q, X and Z
Hangman words built around J, Q, X or Z, such as quiz, flex, pizza and galaxy. Rare letters make a word hard to guess until you think about them.
Read the word list
J, q, x and z are the rarest letters in English, and the numbers show it. In our 15,000 most common words, j appears in 1.1 percent, q in 1.5 percent, z in 1.8 percent and x in 2.3 percent. A sensible player guesses them last, which is why a word that contains one can survive most of the alphabet before the final blank is filled.
This list is the 60 hardest common words with at least one of these letters. We took every word in the top 15,000 with a j, q, x or z, kept those scoring 3 or more, ordered them hardest first and left out any word that already appears on another list. Scores run from 8 down to 4. Job, quit, quiz, flex, quad, flux and zeal lead with 8.
Notice how the rare letter combines with other hazards. Quiz, quad, quit and quay all have a q, but the u that follows is a gift once the q is found. Dizzy and pizza both carry a double z. Flex and flux share a shape with many words ending in x.
60 entries. Our solver needed 5.8 wrong guesses on average: 0 easy, 6 medium and 54 hard. The toughest is job (8 misses), the quickest major (4).

Words worth a closer look
- jobScores 8. Three letters, a rare j and one vowel. A player who guesses vowels first finds the o and then stalls.
- quitScores 8. The q and u go together, so once one lands the other follows, but until then the pattern is very open.
- quizScores 8. A q and a z in four letters. Two of the rarest letters in English in one word.
- flexScores 8. Ends in x, which appears in 2.3 percent of common words, so it is among the last letters tried.
- lazyScores 7. The z sits in the middle and the y closes the word, and neither is a first-guess letter.
- pizzaScores 6. A double z with a short vowel mix. Players who guess i and a still have a pattern like p_zza to solve.
- galaxyScores 5. A longer word that falls faster, with the a repeated, but the x and y arrive late.
- queueScores 5. Only three different letters: q, u and e. It is famous for ending in four vowels in a row.
How to use this list
Use this list when your group needs a goal rather than just a score. Tell players that every word contains one of j, q, x or z, then watch how long they wait before trying them. The smart move is to guess the rare letter early when the pattern suggests it, such as a q at the start of a five-letter word.
The list also suits spelling lessons on awkward letters, especially qu words and x endings. Ask students to sort the words by which rare letter they hold, or to find words that rhyme (flex and hex, quit and knit). For a gentler version, tell players which letter is hiding and let them play for speed.
