Read the word list
Four letters is where hangman is at its most evenly matched. Our solver averages 5.4 wrong guesses on four-letter words, enough to lose a standard game, but not so many that the word feels impossible. There are 1,367 of them in the 15,000 most common words, and the best opening guesses are e (37.6 percent of them), a (34.8 percent) and o (27.3 percent).
This list holds the 60 hardest of those, ordered by score, with the words from the hardest list removed. Scores run from 9 to 11. Duty, bold, junk, bump, bind, pulp and haze are at the top with 11. The group is varied: a few with a lone vowel (bump, junk, pulp), a few that sit in a crowded rhyme family (bold, gold, bind, wind) and a few that end in a y or a silent e.
Rhyme families are the real cause of difficulty. Once a player has _ _ n d, the choices are band, bend, bind, bond, fend, find, fund, hand, kind, land, mind, pond, rind, sand, send, wind and more, and each guess can only remove a few.
60 entries. Our solver needed 10.0 wrong guesses on average: 0 easy, 0 medium and 60 hard. The toughest is yuck (12 misses), the quickest have (9).

Words worth a closer look
- dutyScores 11. A u that is not a first-choice vowel and a final y that most opening guesses miss.
- boldScores 11. A member of the crowded _old family (cold, fold, gold, hold, mold, sold, told), so each guess barely separates them.
- junkScores 11. A j that appears in about 1 percent of common words, plus u as the only vowel.
- bindScores 11. It shares _ind with find, kind, mind, wind and rind, and the vowel i is only one option among them.
- muchScores 10. A very common word, yet m, c and h are mid-ranked letters and the u is not an early vowel guess.
- veryScores 10. Also among the most common words in English. The e is easy, but v, r and y arrive late.
- goldScores 10. Same _old rhyme family as bold, so the pattern does not settle until the first letter lands.
- hazeScores 11. A rare z with a silent e. Players who find a and e still face ha_e, which fits have, hate, haze, hare and more.
How to use this list
Four-letter words are the best length for a mixed class, because there is a real chance of both winning and losing. Give six wrong guesses and watch how often the setter wins; if they win more than half, move to the five-letter list.
A useful drill is to play a round and then ask the group to list every word that fitted the pattern after each guess. Students quickly learn that the choice of the second guess matters more than the first, and that the vowels are not always the right opening. For rhyme-heavy words, switch to consonants after one vowel.
