Read the word list
Rainforest units usually teach three things at once: the layers of the forest, the animals that live in each one, and why the habitat matters. This list follows the same pattern. Canopy, understory and emergent cover the structure, jaguar, toucan and anaconda cover the wildlife, and humidity, biodiversity and deforestation bring in the science vocabulary that appears on unit tests.
Difficulty ranges widely. Words like frog, vine, fern and moss are quick for younger players. Quetzal, tarantula, capybara and mahogany use less common letters and spellings, so they take more guesses even for confident readers. Several phrases, such as poison dart frog and forest floor, are included for longer rounds where the spaces help players work out the shape of the answer.
68 entries. Our solver needed 2.7 wrong guesses on average: 25 easy, 28 medium and 15 hard. The toughest is vine (8 misses), the quickest understory (0).

Words worth a closer look
- canopyThe upper layer where treetops join into a roof. The word comes from a Greek term for a bed covered with netting, which fits the idea of cover overhead.
- biodiversityTwelve letters, shortened from the phrase biological diversity. Three i's make it a satisfying but long round, good for older students.
- mahoganyThe h is silent in speech and the g is easy to forget. Players usually find the o and a first, then struggle with the middle of the word.
- piranhaSpellers often put the h in the wrong place or skip it. Remember the sequence r-a-n-h-a at the end.
- slothThe word is related to slow and originally meant slowness. Only one vowel, so the o falls early, but the th ending is not obvious from the blanks.
- quetzalA bird of Central American forests. It has q and z, two of the rarest letters in English, so players who guess the common letters first still have a lot of blanks left.
- capybaraThe largest living rodent, found near rivers in South America. Three a's in an eight letter word make a an obvious opening guess, and the y and b are what finish it.
- tarantulaThe name is traced to the Italian town of Taranto, where a local wolf spider was first called by it. Three a's and one u in nine letters.
Using this list in class
This list fits a rainforest or habitats unit in grades two to five. Run the first round before the unit starts to see what students already know, then replay it at the end with a fresh set of words. Split the class into three groups, one for each layer of the forest, and have each group collect the words that belong in their layer.
Teachers covering conservation can use deforestation, biodiversity and endangered species as a lead-in to a short discussion. The phrases print well as a half-page warm-up, and the answer key lets students check their own work.
