Zoo Hangman Words
Zoo animal hangman words and phrases, from lion and zebra to hippopotamus and orangutan. Play online or print a sheet with an answer key.
Read the word list
A zoo list suits hangman because children already know most of the animals and like guessing them. This one mixes the crowd pleasers, such as lion, zebra and penguin, with animals that take real letter work: hippopotamus, rhinoceros, chimpanzee and orangutan. It also covers the places and people around the animals, like habitat, aviary and zookeeper, so older players meet vocabulary beyond the animal names.
Short words such as lemur, otter and seal give early readers a quick win. The longer ones carry repeated letters or awkward spellings: chameleon opens with a ch that sounds like k, and gorilla hides a double l. The phrases, including red panda, snow leopard and petting zoo, work well when you want a longer round on a whiteboard or a printed sheet.
74 entries. Our solver needed 2.5 wrong guesses on average: 25 easy, 39 medium and 10 hard. The toughest is petting zoo (12 misses), the quickest elephant (0).

Words worth a closer look
- hippopotamusThe name comes from Greek words meaning river horse. At twelve letters with three p's and two o's, it is a long word that rewards a player who guesses p and o early.
- orangutanFrom the Malay phrase orang hutan, meaning person of the forest. Spellers often write an e or an o in the last syllable by mistake: the ending is a-n.
- rhinocerosBuilt from Greek words for nose and horn. The silent-looking h after r is a classic spelling trap, and the four vowels i, o, e, o are spread out so the early guesses rarely settle it.
- chameleonThe ch is pronounced like a k, which catches out young spellers who sound it out. The word comes from Greek and means something like ground lion.
- lynxFour letters with no a, e, i, o or u. The only vowel is the y, so players who open with vowels get little help. Good for a confident group.
- gorillaMost players guess l and a quickly, but the double l in the middle is easy to miss when writing it out. Compare it with guerrilla, which sounds the same.
- giraffeSeven letters with a double f near the end. Because the g is soft, children often start with j when spelling it from sound.
Using this list in class
Use this list before or after a class trip to a zoo, or alongside a habitats and animal classification unit in grades one to four. Print the sheet and ask pairs to sort each answer into mammals, birds and reptiles once they finish. Younger children can stay with the short words while older ones attempt the long names.
At home, it makes a good car-ride game on the way to a visit: one person picks a word and the rest guess aloud. Teachers working on spelling can pull out words with unusual starts, such as rhinoceros and chimpanzee, for a quick lesson on silent and blended letters.
