Read the word list
Farm vocabulary is rich in names that children learn early and then rarely see written down. This list covers the adult animals (cow, sheep, goose), the young (calf, foal, gosling, piglet), the males and females with their own names (ram, ewe, sow, boar, mare, stallion), the buildings and tools, and the sounds each animal makes.
That structure gives a wide range of difficulty from one topic. Cow, pig and hen have three letters each and finish in a handful of guesses. Heifer, paddock and stallion are better for older players. The sound words, bleat and cluck, are short but have uncommon letter patterns, and silent letters in lamb, calf and ewe make good teaching moments. Phrases like chicken coop and hay bale are simple to read aloud.
74 entries. Our solver needed 4.3 wrong guesses on average: 14 easy, 26 medium and 34 hard. The toughest is kid (11 misses), the quickest rooster (0).

Words worth a closer look
- sheepThe plural is also sheep, which surprises young spellers. A double e in the middle is the pattern to look for, and it fills two spaces in one guess.
- calfThe l is silent. Four letters with a single vowel, so players who guess vowels first will get only a.
- lambThe b is silent, a leftover from an older pronunciation. It is a short word that teaches the idea of silent letters, along with comb and thumb.
- heiferA young female cow that has not yet had a calf. The ei vowel pair is the usual trap, since many people expect ie.
- eweA female sheep, said like you. Three letters, two of them e. It looks easy, but players who go by sound listen for a y and miss the final e.
- gooseThe plural is geese, not gooses. Good for a quick lesson on irregular plurals, with foot and feet or tooth and teeth.
- muleThe offspring of a male donkey and a female horse. Four letters and two vowels, u and e, so vowel-first guessers will find it quickly.
Using this list in class
A farm unit in preschool through second grade pairs naturally with this list. Before a round, read a picture book and have students name the babies and mothers on each page, then play with the young animals. The sound words, moo, oink, cluck and quack, are good for the youngest readers because they can say the answer before they spell it.
For spelling work, sort the words by pattern: silent letters (lamb, calf, ewe), double vowels (sheep, goose, foal) and the ou in trough. Parents can print the sheet before a visit to a petting zoo or county fair and let children look for each animal on the answer key.
