A short word looks like a gift and plays like a trap. The words on this page have three letters, they are all familiar, and the solver averaged 9 to 11 wrong guesses on every one. The cause is the pattern. With only three blanks and no letters to start from, hundreds of words are still possible, and a guess that hits one slot rarely narrows the field.
The generator asked for words of five letters or fewer, among the 20,000 most common, scoring 4 or more, hardest first, and skipped anything already on the hardest list or the length lists. Those other pages took the hardest words of each length first, so the three-letter words that remain fill all 60 places, and the list is made up entirely of them. Scores run from 9 to 11.
Notice how ordinary they are: was, why, got, ago, buy, six, boy, dog, key, fly. Nothing here is obscure. These are words most children know early, which is why the list is useful for older players who expect hangman to be about vocabulary.

Words worth a closer look
- wasScores 10. One of the most common words in English, yet it still cost ten wrong guesses because w_s fits so many other words.
- whyScores 10. No a, e, i, o or u at all, so every vowel guess is a miss. It also appears on the no-vowel list.
- sixScores 10. The x is rare and the i is the only vowel, so the solver misses a lot before it lands.
- dogScores 10. The pattern _o_ also fits dot, log, hop, row and dozens more, so even a correct o leaves the field wide open.
- keyScores 10. A k at the start and a y at the end: neither is a vowel guess, which is where most players begin.
- flyScores 10. Another word with y as its only vowel. Vowel guesses will all miss, which is the whole difficulty.
How to use this list
Use these words for a quick game where the setter has the advantage. Two players can run a round in a minute, and the guesser will usually lose unless they are clever about it. They also make a good demonstration of strategy: show a class that guessing a vowel first is not always right, and ask them to reason about which three-letter words fit.
If you want an easier version, give the guesser the first letter as a clue, or allow ten wrong guesses instead of six. For the hardest three-letter words of all, see the three-letter list, which holds the ones scoring 11 to 14.
