Three-letter hangman words ranked by difficulty, from lab and jet to bin and zip. Short words fit many patterns, so they cost the most guesses.

Three-letter words are the hardest length in hangman, and the data is unambiguous. Across the 15,000 most common words in our dictionary, three-letter words cost the solver an average of 7.5 wrong guesses. Four-letter words average 5.4, five-letter words 3.7, and by ten letters the average is 0.6. A short word hides behind a pattern that fits far too many answers.
There are 473 three-letter words among those 15,000, and the best opening guesses are a (found in 30.2 percent of them), e (24.1 percent) and o (23.7 percent). That sounds helpful until you notice that no letter is in even a third of the words, so every guess is a gamble. Fourteen of the 473 contain no a, e, i, o or u at all.
The list here holds the 60 hardest, with scores of 11 to 14. We took the common three-letter words, ordered them hardest first and removed the dozen that already appear on the hardest list. What is left reads like a first-grade vocabulary: lab, jet, bag, ban, bin, bee, tab, zip.

Words worth a closer look
- jetScores 14. The j is found in about 1 percent of common words, which puts it near the bottom of the solver's order.
- vowScores 14. The v and w are both uncommon letters and the o is the only vowel, so the pattern gives little to work with.
- beeScores 13. The double e fills two slots from one guess, but the b and the rest of the alphabet still stand between the solver and the answer.
- zipScores 13. The z is rare and the i is not the first vowel a player tries, so the word survives most of the alphabet.
- boxScores 11. One of the lower scores here, since the o is found fairly early, but the x holds out.
How to use this list
This list suits any game where the setter wants an edge. In a classroom, use it as a bonus round for a team that has been winning all week. Between two adults it makes a quick game that the guesser will usually lose, which is more fun than it sounds.
For beginners it is a poor choice, because the rounds are over very quickly in the wrong direction. Start younger players on the easy list and bring in three-letter words once they know to think about what letters fit, as well as which ones are common. The strategy guide explains the technique.
