Read the phrase list

Song titles invite singing, which is why this category tends to get louder than most. The list draws on tunes nearly everybody knows: traditional children's songs, Christmas carols, folk and campfire standards, and a handful of famous classics from the last century. Many are in the public domain, and all are just titles, so there are no lyrics here.

Titles are an interesting hangman challenge because the lengths range widely. Yesterday and imagine are single words with a lot of mystery, while we wish you a merry christmas hands out so many common letters that players can fill it in from a few guesses. Repeated words help too: twinkle twinkle little star and row row row your boat are quickly solved once one repeated word is in place, because every correct letter lands twice or three times.

50 entries. Our solver needed 2.7 wrong guesses on average: 3 easy, 1 medium and 2 hard. The toughest is jingle bells (6 misses), the quickest yesterday (0).

How to use this list

Use it as a sing-along game. Solve the title, then everyone sings the first line before the next round begins. For a classroom, music teachers can use the nursery tunes to practice rhythm and the carols for a holiday concert warm-up.

For a mixed-age group, give older players the classics, such as moon river and what a wonderful world, and give younger players the rhymes. A good way to score is to give a point for the solved title and a bonus point for a table that hums the tune correctly.
