Read the phrase list

A phrase round plays differently from a single-word round. The blanks show word lengths and gaps, so players begin by spotting small words: a three-letter word near the start is very often the, and a one-letter word is almost always a or i. Guessing those patterns is a real skill, and it carries over into reading and spelling.

This list sticks to expressions most people say every week: good morning, see you later, take your time, step by step. Because players already know the rhythm of these phrases, they can solve with fewer letters than they would need for an unknown word. That makes the list a gentle way to practice guessing from context, and it is friendly to learners of English, who meet these phrases in real conversation all the time.

The longer entries, like thank you very much and peanut butter and jelly, take more guesses to fill but also give the most clues, because common little words appear in them.

49 entries. Our solver needed 5.0 wrong guesses on average: 0 easy, 6 medium and 6 hard. The toughest is good luck (9 misses), the quickest fresh air (2).

How to use this list

These work best on a whiteboard in a group of six to twenty. Write the blanks, take a letter call from each team in turn, and let anyone shout the full phrase once at least half the letters are in place. A wrong full-phrase guess costs a body part, which keeps people honest.

For English learners, ask students to say the finished phrase in a sentence of their own. For early readers, pick the short phrases such as good night and hot dog, and keep the longer ones for older players.
