The vowel team ai spells the long a sound, the one that says its own name. In rain, mail, paint and trail the two letters work together as a single sound, and the a does the talking while the i stays quiet. Most English words use ai in the middle of a word and ay at the end, which is why you will find wait and sail here but day on the AY list.
Every word on this list was checked against a pronunciation dictionary, not just matched by spelling. That is why said and again are missing: they contain ai but do not make the long a sound. What remains runs from short, common words like aid, aim and tail to longer ones such as straight, praise and strain. Second graders who have mastered silent e usually meet ai next, since both patterns spell the same sound in different ways.

Words worth a closer look
- straightThe ai here sounds like long a, but the gt ending and the length make it the word students miss most. It also has silent gh, which is why it needs more guesses than its neighbors.
- waistSounds exactly like wait but means the middle of the body. Good moment to say that the spelling, not the sound, tells you which word is meant.
- saintThe ai is long a, and the t at the end is easy to forget when spelling by sound alone.
- praiseThe silent e after the s is separate from the ai: it keeps the s from looking like a z. Students often write prase or praze.
- aidOnly three letters, so it is a hard hangman word: very few clues, and two of the letters are vowels.
Teaching it
Teach ai as a position rule first: long a in the middle of a one-syllable word is often ai, and at the end it is ay. Students who spell rain as rane are applying the silent e pattern in the wrong place, so put rain and rane side by side and ask which one the dictionary prefers. Watch for waist and wait, which sound alike but belong to the homophones list later.
In a hangman round, give the pattern as a clue: tell players the word has the long a sound spelled with two letters. Then ask them to place the a and i together before guessing the consonants. Afterward, have each student sort the solved words by ending (ail, ain, aid) on the printable and add two more of their own.
