The pattern: Words where ee spells the long e sound.

Double e is the most consistent way to spell the long e sound. In see, need, feet, week and deep the two e's make one clear vowel sound, with no tricks and no silent partners. Because it is so regular, ee is often the pattern students feel most confident about, which makes it a good first team to teach.

The list runs from three-letter words like fee and bee to longer ones such as freeze, squeeze and sleeve. We checked each word by pronunciation, so the ee really spells long e. Second graders usually already read most of these, so the work is in writing them with both e's every time.

30 entries. Our solver needed 4.1 wrong guesses on average: 4 easy, 16 medium and 10 hard. The toughest is bee (13 misses), the quickest deemed (0).

Teaching it

The common mistake is writing a single e, as in sed for seed or ned for need, or swapping ee for ea because both can spell the same sound. Teach students that ee has no exceptions in sound, then be honest that ea is the one they have to memorize word by word. A short quiz that asks for meat or meet from a sentence makes the difference matter.

In hangman, the double letter gives players a useful clue: if they guess an e and two spaces fill, they know they probably have the team. Ask students to say aloud how many e's they think a word has before it is revealed. For a printable activity, have them sort words by ending sound: eed, eek, eep, eet.
