Read the spelling list
The pattern: Words ending in ay, the usual spelling of long a at the end of a word or syllable.
English words almost never end in the letter i, so when the long a sound comes at the end of a word, it is spelled ay. That single rule explains day, say, pay, way and tray, and it carries over to longer words such as today, away, subway and birthday. The ay ending is one of the first spelling patterns that works as a dependable rule rather than a list to memorize.
The list here includes the short words most second graders already read, plus compounds like highway, hallway and railway, where ay is the last syllable. A few words, such as essay and array, are less common but still follow the pattern. All of them are checked by pronunciation, so the final syllable really does say long a. Words like key, where the ey ending spells a different sound, are not included.

Words worth a closer look
- essayThe ay at the end follows the rule, but the opening es sound trips students who expect a long e. Good example of a word that looks hard but has a regular ending.
- awayThe first a is a schwa sound, easy to skip when writing. Say it as a-WAY and students tend to hear both syllables.
- grayAlso spelled grey, which is the more common spelling in British English. Both are correct; this list uses the US form.
- birthdayA compound of birth and day. Students often drop the h in birth when spelling it by ear.
- subwaySub means under, so a subway is a way under the street. A natural place to connect word parts to meaning.
Teaching it
Pair this list with the AI list and let students discover the position rule themselves: put rain and day on the board, ask what they notice, and let them state it. Then test it with new words. The usual error is writing a for ay in unstressed positions, such as spelling today as toda, or reversing the letters to ya.
Hangman works well here because the y at the end is a strong clue. Play a round where you reveal that the word ends in ay before anything else, and ask players to guess the beginning. Compound words like birthday and highway give the older students in a mixed group something longer to solve, and they are a good bridge to the compound words list.
