Read the spelling list

The pattern: Words where ea spells long e, as in team. Words where ea says short e (bread, head) are left out.

The letters ea are the most common way to spell long e after ee. In team, meat, steam and cream they work together just as ee does, and the sound is the same. What makes ea harder is that the same two letters also say short e in bread and head, and long a in break. Students have to learn which words belong to which group.

This list contains only ea words that say long e, and we checked each one against pronunciation so the words with a different sound stay off. You will find short words such as sea, tea, eat and beat, along with steam, beast, peace and league. A few have extra letters to watch, like breathe and ease, where a silent e follows. These are second grade words in the sense that most seven- and eight-year-olds can read them.

30 entries. Our solver needed 3.3 wrong guesses on average: 8 easy, 13 medium and 9 hard. The toughest is weak (9 misses), the quickest least (0).

Teaching it

Start by showing that ea and ee give students two spellings of the same sound, and tell them directly that the only reliable way to know which one is in a word is to see it written and remember it. Pairs help: meat and meet, sea and see, team and teem. The error is almost always choosing the wrong team rather than a missing letter.

Hangman is a natural fit. After players solve a word, ask them whether it could have been spelled with ee instead, and whether that would make a different word. Seat and seet is not a word, but meat and meet are. Keep a class chart of ea words and add any that students find in their reading.
