Read the spelling list
The pattern: The ending cian names a person with a skill, and it is said /shun/: music becomes musician, magic becomes magician.
The ending cian names a person with a skill or a trade. Music becomes musician, magic becomes magician, electric becomes electrician. It is pronounced /shun/, the same sound as the ending in nation, but it is spelled with c, i, a, n. The c is the one that was already in the base: music has a c, so musician keeps it. That pattern is the main help.
There are fifteen words on the list, including physician, politician, musician, technician, magician, electrician, mathematician, pediatrician, statistician and optician. They are mostly job titles, which is how a seventh grader is most likely to meet them. The list is short on purpose: the ending is rare, and all of its words follow the same pattern, so a student who learns the idea can handle every word.
15 entries. Our solver needed 0.7 wrong guesses on average: 12 easy, 3 medium and 0 hard. The toughest is physician (2 misses), the quickest technician (0).

Words worth a closer look
- musicianMusic plus ian. The c comes from the base.
- electricianElectric plus ian. Students often spell it with a t, as in electritian.
- mathematicianMathematics plus ian. The longest word on the list, so say it in beats: math-e-ma-ti-cian.
- physicianPhysic plus ian. Another c-based word that sounds like shun.
- technicianTechnic plus ian. The ch says k, which students often miss.
Teaching it
Show the base and the c together. Music, magic, electric, technique and optic all have a c, and cian follows from it. A good activity is to write the base noun on the left and the cian person on the right. The common spelling errors are writing tian (mathematitian) or sion because the ending sounds like the shun in nation. Another is writing the ending as cion.
In hangman, a long word like mathematician is satisfying because the ending is predictable. Play a round where the guesser is told the job, then print the worksheet and ask students to write which base word the person's skill comes from.
