The pattern: Two old English suffixes that name a state or relationship: friend becomes friendship, child becomes childhood.

Ship and hood are two suffixes inherited from Old English that turn a word into a noun naming a state, a condition or a relationship. Friend plus ship is friendship, child plus hood is childhood, partner plus ship is partnership. Neither changes the base it attaches to, so the spelling is a straight sum, which makes these two of the most reliable suffixes in the language.

The ship group includes relationship, leadership, championship, partnership, membership, ownership, friendship, scholarship, fellowship, sponsorship and apprenticeship. The hood group includes childhood, brotherhood, adulthood, parenthood, motherhood, statehood, sisterhood and likelihood. Seventh grade work on word origins is a natural home for the pair, because both come from the Germanic side of English rather than the Latin and Greek side that dominates most other lists.

Teaching it

Ask students to separate the base and the suffix, then name the base's part of speech. Most bases are nouns (friend, member, owner, child), so ship and hood mostly build abstract nouns from concrete ones. The spelling is a plain sum with no letters lost, so the typical errors are doubled or dropped letters at the join, such as membership written with one m in the middle or parenthood without its second h.

Likelihood is the odd one: like plus lihood is not a simple sum, so teach it as a whole shape. Hangman suits the group because every answer ends in the same four or five letters. Give the ending free, let players guess the base, then print the worksheet and ask students to write the base beside each word.
