The pattern: Ex means out of or away from: export, exclude, exhale.
Ex is a Latin prefix that means out of or away from. To export is to carry out, to expand is to spread out, to exclude is to shut out. In many words the idea is still clear, in others the prefix has merged with a root that no longer stands alone: explain, explore and expect all begin with ex but the remaining part is not a word on its own.
The list holds thirty words, such as except, expect, explain, excited, exercise, express, excuse, external, exposed, exposure, explanation, exhibition, exception, expand, extend, explore, export, expense, excess and excellence. Before a c, k, s, x or h, ex is pronounced as eks, and before other sounds it is often pronounced as ig, as in example. Seventh graders have the vocabulary to see ex as a meaningful piece, and the list shows how common it is.

Words worth a closer look
- exceptEx plus cept, to take: to take out. Often confused with accept, which has a different prefix.
- excitedEx plus cite: to call out. The silent e is dropped before ed.
- exposureExpose plus ure. The e of expose drops.
- exhibitionEx plus hibit, to hold: to hold out for others to see. The h is not pronounced in speech.
- excellenceEx plus cell: to rise up. Two l letters and the ence ending, not ance.
Teaching it
Use the meaning out as a starting point and look for the idea in each word. External means on the outside, exposed means put out in the open, extend means stretch out. When the base is not a word, chunk by syllable: ex-plain, ex-plore. The usual spelling errors cluster at the join. Students write exs for ex (exsite for excite), double the c in excellent, or leave out the x in expect and write espect.
For hangman, e and x are free, so the game really tests the rest of the word. Choose a handful of words that start with exc, like except, excited, excuse and excess, and have students say which letters follow the x. Print the worksheet and ask students to sort the words into ones where out is clear and ones where they must look it up.
