Read the spelling list
The pattern: The suffix ize means to make or become: modern becomes modernize. American spelling uses ize where British often uses ise.
The suffix ize means to make or to become. Modern becomes modernize, legal becomes legalize, summary becomes summarize. It forms verbs, usually from adjectives and nouns, and it is a very productive suffix: new ize words appear all the time, such as prioritize and customize. The ending is pronounced /eyez/.
There are thirty words on this list, among them realize, recognize, apologize, organize, minimize, maximize, emphasize, criticize, stabilize, authorize, summarize, memorize, sympathize, symbolize and visualize. American spelling uses ize in these words, while British spelling often uses ise, so the choice also touches on spelling variation between countries. Seventh grade readers meet the verbs in assignments (summarize, emphasize) and in the vocabulary of any subject.

Words worth a closer look
- realizeReal plus ize. Students often write realise, which is the British spelling.
- organizeOrgan plus ize. Common errors are organise and orginize.
- summarizeSummary loses its y before ize. Often misspelled summarise.
- memorizeMemory becomes memorize: the y drops. A good example of an ending replacing a letter.
- jeopardizeHard to spell because of the eo in the middle. Say jep-ar-dize.
Teaching it
Have students find the base: legal, summary, memory, modern, symbol. Many lose a final letter: summary drops the y, memory drops the y, stable drops the e. The usual spelling error is writing the ending as ise, which is standard in British spelling but not in American. Another is dropping the g from recognize. Hold the rule: in American spelling these verbs take ize.
In hangman, i, z and e are free, so the challenge is the base. A longer word like characterize or prioritize is solved fast once the ending is known. Print the worksheet and have students write the base next to each word, then use one of the verbs in a sentence.
