Read the spelling list
The pattern: Long words with two doubled letters, a classic source of spelling mistakes: accommodate, committee, embarrass.
Some of the most often misspelled words in English contain two separate pairs of doubled letters. Committee has mm and tt, accommodate has cc and mm, and embarrass has rr and ss. Students usually remember that something is doubled but not which letter or how many times, and that uncertainty is the whole difficulty.
The list contains thirty words, including committee, committed, officially, successfully, commissioner, essentially, occasionally, accidentally, additionally, annually, embarrassing, accommodation, unnecessary, effectiveness, aggression and volleyball. Many are adverbs built from an adjective with ly, so the double letters come partly from the base and partly from the ending, as in accidental plus ly. Eighth grade is when students write longer pieces and tend to lose accuracy in words like these.

Words worth a closer look
- committeeDouble m, double t and double e: three pairs in a nine-letter word.
- accommodateDouble c and double m. A classic memory hook: it has room for both.
- embarrassingDouble r and double s. Dropping one r or s is the most common error.
- occasionallyDouble c, single s, double l. Often misspelled occassionally.
- unnecessaryUn plus necessary: nn in the middle, and necessary has one c and two s.
Teaching it
Chunk by syllable and say each letter pair as its own beat: com-mit-tee, ac-com-mo-date, em-bar-rass. A mnemonic helps for the hardest ones, such as the two c and two m of accommodate, as a hotel big enough for both. Check the word family too: commit leads to committed and committee, and success leads to successful and successfully. The typical error is doubling the wrong pair, such as comitee or acommodate.
In hangman, the double letters are an advantage: when a player gets a letter right, two instances fill at once. Ask players to say which letter will be doubled before guessing it. Print the worksheet and ask students to underline both pairs in every word.
