Read the spelling list
The pattern: Ible usually follows a root that is not a whole word on its own (visible, edible), which is the key to telling it from able.
Ible is the less common partner of able. Both mean can be or able to be, and both are pronounced the same, so the difference is purely one of spelling and history. Able is the living suffix: it still attaches to new words, such as streamable. Ible is a fossil from Latin, found on roots that rarely stand alone, which is why you cannot say vis or aud without the ending.
The list contains thirty words, among them irresponsible, susceptible, tangible, plausible, edible, convertible, irresistible, audible, invincible, negligible, reversible, inaccessible, permissible, indestructible and infallible. Most are long, because prefixes such as in, ir and im are stacked in front. In eighth grade the focus is on seeing a word as prefix, root and suffix at once, and ible words are excellent practice for that.

Words worth a closer look
- audibleAud is the root for hear, as in audio. Remove ible and you are left with a fragment, which is the clue.
- edibleCan be eaten. Students sometimes write edable.
- plausibleBelievable, from a root that is not a word on its own. Students sometimes write plausable.
- tangibleCan be touched. Often misspelled tangable.
- susceptibleHard to spell because of the sus at the start and the cep in the middle. Say it in syllables: sus-cep-ti-ble.
- irresistibleIr, resist, ible: three parts. The doubled r comes from the prefix meeting the base.
Teaching it
Teach the check from fourth grade again, with more words: take off the ending, and if what remains is a complete word, the suffix is probably able. If it is a fragment, ible is likely. Then add a second test: look for a related word that shares the root. Audible goes with audio and visible with vision. The pattern is not perfect, and several ible words, such as convertible, reversible and deductible, have whole-word bases, so these are simply learned.
For hangman, ask players to guess the ible ending first, then the stack of prefixes. A word like incomprehensible is solved in few guesses once the common endings are in place. Print the worksheet and have students write the able and ible words they know on opposite sides of a page, then compare.
